First Annual Storm Drain Stenciling Event!

The Greater Gallatin Watershed Council (GGWC), in collaboration with the City of Bozeman and Big Sky Youth Empowerment (BYEP), will be leading a storm drain stenciling project to increase community awareness of urban run-off issues in Bozeman Creek. Participants will be stenciling storm drain inlets in downtown Bozeman with the logo “No Dumping, Drains to Bozeman Creek” to raise awareness of the relationship between stormwater and surface water pollution. Potential pollutants in Bozeman Creek are known to come from dog waste, fertilizers, cleaning products, parking lot run-off and erosion from trails and yards.

The storm drain stenciling event will take place on July 27th and 28th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm both days on S. Grand and S. 3rd Aves. There will be 48 9th and 10th grade students from both Belgrade and Bozeman high schools participating in the event. The group has a goal of stenciling approximately 100 storm drain inlets over the two day period. “The City of Bozeman is delighted to be working with GGWC and BYEP with the goal of educating our community about water quality and what we can do collectively to keep our streams and rivers in Montana clean,” stated city manager Chris Kukulski.

Prior to the stenciling event, staff from the GGWC and the City of Bozeman will spend Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening jointly educating the BYEP youth participants on the City of Bozeman’s stormwater system, sources of urban run-off and the environmental implications. We would like to invite the media to the Thursday (June 25) evening class from 6:45-7:45pm at BYEP’s offices at the corner of Olive and Black, and also on Saturday, June 27 from 10:30am to noon to the stenciling event. On Saturday groups will be stenciling on S. Tracy and S. Grand from Curtiss to Story.

Funding for this project was made possible through a grant that the GGWC received from the Montana Department of Environmental Quality. Additional funding and supplies also provided by the City of Bozeman and BYEP.
